The challenges of sustainability

Theories and empirical data uniquely demonstrate that there is a strong and decisive „human footprint“ on climate change. That man is the cause, if not the only, by far the main cause of the increase in temperature and the increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This demonstration, according to the IPCC, has a very high degree of reliability.

We can therefore affirm with scientific rigor that man has contributed to changing the climate of the planet on which he lives.

July 2019 was the hottest month in history, as confirmed by a statement released yesterday by the United Nations. During a press conference
in fact, the Secretary General António Guterres announced that the month of July exceeded by about 1.2 degrees Celsius the temperatures recorded during the pre-industrial period, a figure that „at least equals if it does not even exceed the hottest month ever recorded in history „, according to data provided by the World Meteorological Organization. Currently the definitive July temperatures must still be recorded, however preliminary data show that the temperatures reported are approximately the same or slightly higher than those reported for the previous record in July 2016.
If we do not act immediately to combat climate change, Guterres commented, „the climatic disasters we are experiencing will only become the tip of the iceberg“.

In fact, also counting 2019, the last 5 years have been the hottest in the history recorded by humanity.
In the Arctic area the heat in July was staggering especially in Alaska, Siberia, and Scandinavia. In the Arctic Ocean, sea ice has reached a record low in recent months.
It is not yet clear how this type of such violent weather events will affect the warming of individual country temperatures. Guterres, in fact, these days is summoning world leaders in New York for an emergency climate summit, in the hope of succeeding in doubling their efforts towards the permanent abandonment of fossil fuels.

The climate continuously influences our entire existence. The sky is often the first thing we look at as soon as we wake up in the morning. Pressure and humidity affect our body and our mood; who, in fact, never said today I am depressed: it will be the fault of the rain!
At least once a day almost all of us find out about weather forecasts and from birth we are used to the seasonal cycles that regulate the biological cycles of all living beings.

For some people this change may seem irrelevant. However, if the Earth’s temperature increases by another 4 ° C both the glaciers of Greenland and Antarctica could melt completely. These changes would be reflected on the whole planet, for example with the rise in sea level globally.
The changes that occur within the biosphere can also be caused by natural events, such as the eruption of a volcano. A large eruption can emit large amounts of dust that can alter the climate.
Currently the changes caused by human activities have reached worrying levels as they are almost out of control.

We therefore declare ourselves in a state of emergency and alarm, and in this spirit we ask the schools: they teach the truth and declare the climate emergency.
