Book of the Day

View with grain of sand.

The tender touch of a salt grain appears as a symbol of what is smaller and everyday, so often considered not worthy of attention because it is almost imperceptible with respect to the vision of the world, of the future.

The Szymborska, does not conceal its constant amazement aimed at the functioning of the mechanisms of the world, which cannot be described solely with the statistical and generalized language of large numbers.

His emotional and intellectual sensitivity leads the reader from a timeless philosophical, social and ethical problem to the difficulties of daily existence, from a grain of sand, through the history of civilization and culture, to what is beyond, even hypothetical entities .

When the news arrived that the Nobel Prize for 1996 had been awarded to Wislawa Szymborska, many newspapers wrote that it was a poet more or less unknown. Actually Iosif Brodsky considered her, together with Milosz and Herbert, one of the great poetic voices today. And at the same time it can be said of her that rarely a modern poet has managed to talk about forbidden themes, because they are too beaten, with such fearless security of touch, to the point of dedicating one of his most perfect lyrics to „happy love“ , this „scandal in the highest spheres of life“. This volume is a collection that runs through all his work since 1957 and also includes the speech given on the occasion of the awarding of the Nobel Prize.

The typical lyric situation on which a poem based on Szymborska’s works is based is the comparison between the directly expressed or implied opinion on a problem and the question that raises doubts about its validity.

The consideration does not only reflect a widely shared or representative belief of a widespread mentality, but it also possesses a certain absolutism on the latter: the underlying philosophy is usually in favor of defending the individual’s uniqueness and his ability to observe.

The Polish poet, telling of events that at first sight are negligible because they are obvious in their being routine, follows the free meter along the path that leads to their presentation, it may happen that she loses the thread of what she is expressing so she changes register, she speaks of something else and without useless yearnings it resumes what was left unresolved re-joining it at the same time to the reader who radically devalues the reality of the facts.

What happens resembles the snapshot of our psyche at a given moment. The perspective on a tangle of perceived states ready to change in the presence of a stimulus.

The author’s challenge could consist in realizing that one should be afraid of more than oneself and seek, through one’s identity awareness and the primordial sonorities of the senses, the need to comfort a tiredness announcing a poetic by now exhaustive its expressive abilities, the result of the worst social aberrations of the century.

The essence of the proposed work is participation in all the issues of this world, the great sensitivity, the universality of the subject because an individual capable of taking responsibility in the name of what he lives for, to protest against the inexpressive transparency of values on which we have stopped asking ourselves.

Poetry, according to Szymborska’s opinion, is everywhere, in every detail that surrounds the human being and there is only the need to open the mind and turn beyond understanding itself, finally clinging to doubt as to the last of the certainties.
