The natural world is much more than a source of beauty and charm. Nature-inspired innovation is today one of the most influential drivers of innovative technologies … an ideal opportunity to teach in a simple way, which suggests that politicians who focus exclusively on the classroom lack an opportunity: even modest investments in informal science, education could help make large investments in formal education considerably more effective. Most of the necessary infrastructure is already in place: museums and zoos, for example, have existed for generations. Similarly, government funding mechanisms – such as NASA and the National Science Foundation (NSF) – finance scientific exhibits, television specials and other informal science education projects.

As Andrew Jones, a member of the Climate Interactive, an organization that aims to create rigorous scientific tools to raise awareness of climate change, said, „we do not need ten thousand experts, but a billion amateurs“.
